WHY?!

Talking to an internet friend about her upcoming move to the Philippines made me realize how interesting my time in the military has been. In preparation for retirement in a couple of years, I would like to share some sea stories.

I have no earthly idea why I joined the military. Even after pondering it all these years, my best guess was that I was afraid of the future. I joined the Navy in the middle of my senior year of high school. Over the Christmas holidays, I had suddenly been faced with the realization that I was not prepared to go to college nor could my family or I afford it. I mentioned my idea to join the military to friends but it was met by disbelief that a girl would want to do that. See, in my town, girls either went to college or they flipped burgers until they got married and had kids. What else was there?

I went to the local recruiting office for the Air Force. I picked the Air Force because, I liked the flight attendant idea and their uniforms were pretty. Oh and my dad was Navy. A small little rebellion. The Air Force recruiter ended my desire to join the AF within about ten minutes by flat out stating that there was nothing for women in the military and they should not even be allowed to join anyway. Harrumph. Now, I wasn?t as outspoken and assertive back then as I am now but I knew enough to be indignant about this.

So I walked next door to the Navy office and had the good fortune to meet Dwayne Black and Tom Porath. Both were near to retirement and on a mission to pull out the stops to make sure I got what I wanted. I had no idea how fortunate I was until I went to boot camp and heard the horror stories of recruiters who screwed people over in order to make their monthly quota. I was fortunate because, I never read a single paper they had me sign. I tested fairly high on the military entrance exam (ASVAB) and ended up picking Hospital Corpsman over Cryptology Technician.

Since I was 17, my mommy signed on the dotted line and on February 23, 1983, I was officially IN!

Wow, Seth has burst into words all of the sudden.

Eli spoke very early but steadily picked words and phrases up at an even pace. Jake didn't say a thing until about 18 months when he broke into sentences (Eli did all his talking for him). Seth has kind of followed Jake's pattern. He is 21 months old now and here are the main things he says:

Gimmee that
I want one
I'll get it (shouted when the phone or doorbell rings)
Stop
No!
Drink
Jax, Jay (Jake), Eli, Mom
Plane
Dog bone
Light
Nose
Bike
Stinky (and its partner: poo poo)
Hot
I go outside
I get down
Nurse (and its partner: Other side)
Night night
Please, Thank you
I want gum
Okay
Shoe
Juice
Bite
Hi
Bye
Ciao Ciao
Buono (screw your index finger back and forth onto your cheek and that is how Italian kids indicate a food is tasty)

And our new favorite: I fahted

And for Jake's developmental latest:

He lost one top tooth last week and showed me that his other one was also loose. I vigorously suggested he NOT wiggle it so he would at least have SOME teeth but he was bound and determined to get it out of there. School starts next week, school pictures quickly following.

Eli is just busy being Eli. He is so helpful to me when it comes to Seth. When Seth walks away from us in a public place, Eli automatically goes and gently redirects him. Now, if I could only get him to treat Jake that way!

Trying something new

My new digital camera takes short video clips in MPG format. I ignored it for a while but started playing around with it and it is such a cool little tool! You know how you film for twenty minutes at a time only to find out later how boring it is? Not so with this format. You have about 30 seconds to capture something. Anyway, thought I would start posting a short clip each week. I wish I could get it to stream but it won't from the server I am using. What I will do instead is simply link the file for download. Beware, this first one is a monster, weighing in at nearly 15mb! It takes a little bit to load. I will try to keep them shorter later.

This clip is entitled "Teradactyl". Eli says that Seth's toddler shriek must be what teradactyls used to sound like. It is ear piercing. We were in a store the other day when he did it and we heard from the next aisle over "THAT is why I will never have children". We laughed our butts off. Eli wants me to put up the disclaimer that we had just woken up and his hair is sleep infested.

Teradactyl

p.s. I am also in the process of putting in a photo gallery section that will make it a snap for me to upload pictures (read: a lot less procrastination). You will also be able to put comments under each picture if you want (can you tell I am excited?!). Stay tuned, should be sometime this week.

African email scam

This ought to keep you busy for a while! I have received this email in my own inbox many times. I actually thought about responding just to see what would happen. Then I discovered that several people actually had. A good time was had by most.
