Hello? This is 1982 calling and I would like my dress back.
I opened up an email from my sister Kim yesterday and lo and behold was a picture of us taken just before our dates took us to my senior prom! I had to laugh with the unexpected pleasure of that teenage memory.
I dated this guy Shawn for nearly two years. He went to our rival highschool, I had met him at biology camp. I was this odd mix of geek, shy and outgoing and he was my perfect match. I was pretty much a good girl as a teenager although I am sure my attitude was more than typical. It never occured to me to drink or smoke or sneak out. My mother told me that girls who let guys "go all the way" would immediately have a bad reputation, with the whole school knowing. I figured a bad reputation must be far worse than no reputation at all so Shawn and I never groped below the neck. Ever. Did I say ever? Never. We would kiss and slobber and breathe funny for hours and hours (like two or three hours at a time). We desperately wanted to do ANYTHING else but neither of us could possibly be the one to initiate so we didn't. Eventually, this got old and we decided around the start of our senior year, to break up. No tears.
Unfortunately, this meant no date for senior prom. I didn't think it was that big of a deal really. The friday prior to prom my mother announced, "your cousin is coming over". This was definitely not normal, this was my very, very smart and beautiful cousin Valerie (almost exactly the same age as me) and we did not *hang out*. ??? "Oh, she's bringing a dress over". ???
It turned out that my mother had master minded my prom event. She called Valerie and borrowed a formal dress for me. But wait, that isn't all. She called my ex and made him take me to prom. Made him. He brought a corsage that matched, folks. Did you ever wish for the earth to open up and envelope you back into her bosom? I did. My mom may be about a half foot shorter than me but she is a force to be reckoned with, so after some initial pouting (and secret thrilling), I went to the prom with my exboyfriend, his bestfriend and my sister.
We had a blast.
(My sister Kim is in blue and I am looking positively HOT in maroon LOL)
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a King
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...
You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen
You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave them burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...
You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen
(ABBA, Dancing Queen)
**post script: We ended up going to Disney World the next day but that was the extent of that. Shawn promptly boinked the trampiest girl (by all accounts not just mine) at their school and, wait for it.............................married her.

You look HOT??!!! LOL How about me?? I think I looked pretty good myself.LOL I wonder why we didn't get our hair done all fancy like the girls do now-a-days.I did have fun ,but I wished(before, in the past) I could do that night over.I would go out on the floor and actually dance.I was to shy to then.I would have had a lot more fun. Debbie I never knew the circunstances behind you and the prom.I would have just died!! LOL

Why in the WORLD!!! would I be in on it.The only reason I got to go is because Austin asked me to.I didn't even get to go to Disney World.
I didn't think it was a joke because you are always so confident of yourself, I thought you really thought that. You should.I think we both looked sweet.Wished I still was,LOL

Oh P.S. I didn't have to make him take you. He wanted too. He said he didn't want to break up with you at all. He was really glad and excited to do it. Kim I think you have forgotten. We both went to Valerie's to get the dress. I just didn't tell you the whole story about what was going to happen. I knew you would tell Debbie. I know if I told Debbie before hand she wouldn't have gone. Even then you were very independent.
